So out of date, in fact, that I'm too embarrassed to admit just how many versions had been released since the one I've been using. Yikes.

It's good to be back.Grumpy Badgerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04892378462455520349noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4743847827965835115.post-38994086151100053152012-02-13T13:45:20.878-08:002012-02-13T13:45:20.878-08:00kgoold- I don't want to criticize the school p...kgoold- I don't want to criticize the school publically, but I took a dud of a class. I don't fault the school, and would consider other courses there. However, they are not strictly hand-tool oriented... and their workbenches are not either. You might consider Port Townsend if you want to focus on hand tools. I would love to go back to Gary's school for one of the toolmaking workshops.

Badger - the hot dog was really nice. Not cheap - some $70, but it is not made of plastic like it seems, it is cast aluminum. I believe it was on Cornish Workshop that I saw an article on making one out of wood. I might give that a shot.

Eric - Yes Dave's tools are so nice, I desire them but can't justify it (yet). I have one of his mallets and it is amazing how much more pleasant it is to use than any of the others I have tried.

We should arrange a meetup next time. I was the short guy in a ball cap with dividers on it. I spent most of my time talking to Ron Hock and Gary Rogowski, also using the Lie Nielsen saws (and shooting plane). Did you see the kids there? Amazing how skilled they already were.

Patrick, that is horrible. I saw the sign regarding theft and assumed it was always there, bummer that Portland is getting a bad reputation because of some low-life.upriverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16831787533348044017noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4743847827965835115.post-42951286931111332512012-02-12T18:22:18.620-08:002012-02-12T18:22:18.620-08:00I was there at the same time as well, recognized t...I was there at the same time as well, recognized the two engineers. It would be nice to have a way to link up at these events. The 51 will remain on my wish list, it is amazing! The really bad, bad news was someone(s) stole five Lie-Nielsen planes and a bunch of their chisels on Friday. They apparently just slipped them under a coat and walked out.Patrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06054406841192174322noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4743847827965835115.post-10526252567342377242012-02-12T17:59:52.259-08:002012-02-12T17:59:52.259-08:00I'm glad you enjoyed the trip. A class is only as good as the instructor, and I would certainly recommend taking a class from him. One of these years I will take one of his week long classes in the summer. Everyone I've talked to has universally praised them.

I got out of there without spending too much money - though I did order a chisel from Dave Jeske - like I always do at these things.

I was about to mention that we might have been there at the same time on Saturday (what a beauty of blogging - most of us have no idea what each other looks like), then I looked closer at your pictures. The one of Kevin Glen Drake trying to teach those two engineers how to saw (that was great entertainment) - that's me partially cut off in the picture on the far right. I guess we were there at the same time!

-EricAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4743847827965835115.post-85813072566252796952012-02-12T11:58:14.275-08:002012-02-12T11:58:14.275-08:00I'm going to the Seattle one in 2w, and it'...I'm going to the Seattle one in 2w, and it's always fun and agonizing. Fun, that's obviousl. Agonizing, seeing all the tools you simple cannot afford. such as the plane you posted... which I also want.
